Montrose ABC Has Two Scottish Champions

14th December 2009

Once again Kane Morphew returned home from a successful visit to Fife at the weekend after competing in the Scottish Junior Novice Championships (75Kg) and retaining the title he won last year.

The competition took place over Saturday and Sunday and Kane won both of his fights to retain his title.

The first bout was fairly easy with the referee stopping the contest after just thirty five seconds with Kane completely overwhelming his opponent, C Barr from O'Neill's Club in Glasgow.

His second however proved to be a bit more anxious for a few seconds in the third round.
Fighting against R Watters from Forgewood ABC, Motherwell, Kane was well on top until he was caught in the corner in the third round with a barrage of punches, and the ref gave him a standing count of eight seconds. He recovered his composure however, and ran out a comfortable winner apart from this slight lack of concentration.

His mentor Rory Thomson was a very proud coach indeed, with this successful defense of last year's title.

"I knew he would do well, and I am confident that he will continue to improve and win more fights."
His record is very good indeed, six wins, no defeats.

The club is doing well and more young boxers are already taking the lead from Kane's success.

At the same event young John Docherty from Montrose ABC, became our second Scottish Novice Champion, this time at 44Kg.
In only his third and fourth fights, John had a great event, winning both his bouts on points against opponents from Fort William and from Inverness. Well done John, from all the members of our club!
John like Kane is undefeated in his fights (four), since boxing for the club at this weight.

The club is in its third year and it continues to attract a growing number of young people interested in the sport of boxing.

What is needed more than anything however, is security in finding accommodation for our young boxers. The club is still not sure what the long term holds for them, with the present premises still being used on a temporary basis.
Hopefully, this coming season will see greater efforts from Angus Council to help secure a permanent base for the club.

If you feel that Montrose ABC is right for you, and you have decided to give it a try, then please come along to the gym between 6:00pm to 7:00pm (Juniors) and 7:00 to 8:00pm (Seniors) on Mondays and Wednesdays. You can find us at Traill Drive next to the Golf Clubs.

The club is closing for the Winter Break but will resume training on Moday 11th January at 6pm at Traill Drive.

A big thanks to Rory and Scott for all their hard work and also Fitness Coaches Michelle Norvel and Nick Findlater, and part time helper George Simpson.
